More than 74 people have been killed and at least 187 injured by Greece's worst wildfires in a century. On Tuesday (AEST), officials confirmed the latest death toll number, which included many children.

The inferno is thought to be Greece's deadliest, with the death toll higher than fires which ravaged the southern Peloponnese peninsula over several days in August 2007.

Hundreds of firefighters and volunteers battled the blazes while people fled their homes near Athens.

Hashtag help

As the horrific news and images spread internationally, social media was inundated with users sharing their shock and despair. On Twitter hashtags which included #PrayForGreece, #SolidarityWithGreece, #PrayForAthens and #HelpGreece went viral as people showed their support for the victims and their families.
Using the hashtags #HelpGreece and #HelpGreeceNow social media users endeavoured to collect bottled water, medication, blankets and bandages, while others volunteered their services for the families of victims. Other users encouraged their followers to donate funds to bank accounts set up by the affected municipalities.
"Greece is going through an unspeakable tragedy," Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on television on Tuesday, declaring three days of national mourning.
