Czech tennis player Tomas Berdych will not play in this year's US Open after he was diagnosed with appendicitis during his participation in the Cincinnati Open.
The world no. 8 player confirmed the news on his Facebook account as he said: "I'm very disappointed to announce that I will not be able to compete at the US. Open this year.
"I was just diagnosed with appendicitis in Cincinnati, so I will be flying back to Europe for additional checks and treatment," he said.
The Czech player pointed out that he will need to "take some time off to recover fully" but he is looking forward to playing again "as soon as possible".
Berdych, 30, has not missed the last 52 editions of Grand Slams since the US Open of 2003, while he played the Wimbledon final in 2010 against Spanish Rafael Nadal.
