NT coastal areas prepare for cyclone

Residents have been warned to prepare as Tropical Cyclone Owen moves east from Queensland towards the NT coast.

Residents along the Northern Territory's east coast have been warned to prepare for Tropical Cyclone Owen as it moves east from Queensland.

A cyclone warning is in place from Cape Shield in the Northern Territory to Burketown in Queensland, including Groote Eylandt and Mornington Island.

The Bureau of Meteorology's Laura Boekel said the cyclone was expected to do a U-turn on Thursday before it reaches the NT, but coastal areas from the town of Borroloola to the Queensland border should prepare for destructive winds.
